Usually, you can find out before you order. A photo that looks great in your camera roll may not suit a large photo poster, but megapixels alone do not decide the result. The file, crop, orientation, sharpness, brightness and chosen size all work together.

The most useful first step is simple: use the best version of the image you have, choose the size you want, then inspect the Quality Evaluation Tool and design preview. In the Wallpoet designer, that gives you a practical answer for your actual photo rather than a generic resolution rule.

The quick answer: check the photo at the size you want to print

Your photo is good enough to print when the specific file, composition and intended photo poster size produce a result you would be happy to put on the wall. The answer can change when you crop more tightly, switch between portrait and landscape, or choose a larger format.

Find the best available original file, ideally from your camera roll or camera rather than a screenshot, social-media download or compressed copy.

Upload the image to the Wallpoet designer.

Set the crop and orientation that give the photograph its best composition.

Choose the intended photo poster size.

Review the quality level and the design preview before ordering.

Wallpoet’s Quality Evaluation Tool considers resolution, the selected crop, poster size and orientation, as well as sharpness and brightness.

What determines whether a photo will print well?

Pixel dimensions tell you how much image information a file contains, but they only become useful in relation to the physical size you want to print. A larger photo poster spreads those pixels over a larger area, so it generally asks more of the source image than a smaller one.

Cropping matters just as much. A large original can become a weaker print file if you zoom in heavily on one small part of it. Before deciding how big you can print your photo, make the crop you actually want to use. That is the portion of the image that needs to hold up.

Pixel dimensions can also be misleading. Digital zoom does not capture the same additional detail as moving closer to the subject or using optical zoom. The resulting file may still contain plenty of pixels, even though fine detail is limited. Screenshots can cause a similar problem: their pixel dimensions describe the screenshot itself, not the quality of the original photograph inside it.

Resolution is not a substitute for a good photograph. A high-resolution image can still disappoint if the subject is out of focus or blurred by movement. Dark images can also have less usable detail and more visible noise.

Faces deserve extra attention

Viewing distance matters too. Wall art is normally viewed from some distance, and Wallpoet’s quality guidance is based on a normal viewing distance of around 1–1.5 metres depending on print size. But people don’t always look at photographs that way.

In our experience, people naturally tend to step closer when looking at faces. This is particularly important in group photos where each person’s face occupies only a small part of the image, such as a class photo or a large family group. The poster may look good from a normal viewing distance while limited facial detail becomes much more noticeable when someone walks up to look closely.

For photos like these, inspect the faces at 100% before ordering and be a little more conservative about print size.

Faces can contain surprisingly little detail in a group photo. An image that looks sharp as a whole may reveal its limitations when you step closer to inspect individual faces.

Photo resolution for printing: what PPI and DPI actually mean

PPI, or pixels per inch, describes how densely an image file’s pixels would be placed across a printed area. DPI is often used casually in print conversations, but it is not a complete measure of whether a photograph will look good. Focus, lighting, compression and the crop still matter.

As a general external guideline, divide an image’s pixel width and height by 300 to estimate its dimensions at about 300 PPI. For example, a 3,000 × 2,000-pixel image works out to roughly 25 × 17 cm at that density. Around 300 PPI is commonly used as a high-detail reference for prints viewed close up, not a universal pass or fail line.

Larger wall art is normally viewed from farther away, so a lower relative resolution can still look acceptable in the right image. That is why a calculation is useful context, but not the final verdict. For an individual photo poster, the Quality Evaluation and preview are more actionable than trying to apply one PPI threshold to every photograph.

Why a photo can look fine on your phone but disappoint in print

A phone screen is bright, small and usually viewed at a comfortable distance. That can hide softness, shadow noise and compression artifacts that become easier to notice in print. Screen contrast and image processing can also make a dark or slightly blurred photo seem stronger than it is.

Before uploading, inspect the image closely at 100%, preferably at a regular computer or laptop screen. Look at the parts that matter most to the final photo poster, rather than judging the image only as a whole.

Check faces, eyes, fine texture and high-contrast edges for missed focus or motion blur.

Look into dark areas for visible noise or lost detail.

Watch for blocky compression, especially in images saved from social media or repeatedly shared through messaging services.

Be cautious with digital zoom, screenshots and images exported from third-party editing tools, which may have been resized or compressed in the process.

Use the original camera-roll file whenever practical, since it usually contains more useful image information than a derivative copy. If you’re using an iPhone photo, our guide to turning an iPhone photo into a poster covers the complete process from camera roll to finished print.

Can I print a low-resolution photo?

Often, yes. A lower-resolution image may still make a satisfying photo poster at a smaller size, especially when the composition works without a tight crop. The right decision depends on the particular file and how you want the finished piece to look in your home.

Choose a smaller photo poster size and review the Quality Evaluation Tool and preview again.

Use a less aggressive crop when the composition allows, so more of the original image area is retained.

Look for the best original version before relying on a screenshot, download or shared copy.

If you’re still unsure, send the image to care@wallpoet.com and we’ll be happy to take a look before you order. We can only guarantee a manual review before an order is placed, as production may begin before we’re able to respond.

Ultimately, technical quality is only part of the decision. We’ve learned from many customers over the years that sometimes the memory matters more than perfect technical quality. An older family photo or a once-in-a-lifetime moment can still be worth printing even when the Quality Evaluation Tool recommends a smaller size or shows a lower quality level.

Use Wallpoet’s Quality Evaluation Tool before ordering

You can create a photo poster in a browser on mobile or desktop. Upload a JPG, JPEG, PNG or HEIC file through your device’s available Photos or Files interface, then set the crop, portrait or landscape orientation and intended size. Wallpoet photo posters are available in 21 × 30 cm, 30 × 40 cm, 40 × 50 cm, 50 × 70 cm and 70 × 100 cm.

Use the five-level Quality Evaluation Tool as a practical guide. Levels 1 and 2 broadly indicate low or insufficient expected quality, level 3 indicates an intermediate or acceptable result, and levels 4 and 5 indicate good to very good expected quality. A final warning appears when you try to add a level 1 or 2 photo poster to the cart, but you can still proceed.

The preview is where you check composition: whether important details remain visible, whether the crop feels balanced and whether the overall design works. It reflects the design you have created, though screen and printed colour can differ. Use the preview alongside the Quality Evaluation Tool to make the final decision about whether your photo will print well.

A photo doesn’t need to be technically perfect to deserve a place on your wall. Start with the best file you have, let the Quality Evaluation Tool guide you, and choose the size and crop that make the most of the photograph.
